Buying Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy vs. a Real Partner: What Your Practice Gives Up

Thousands of small practices bought Microsoft 365 the easy way — bundled with their domain at GoDaddy or another web host. It worked on day one. Years later, it's quietly costing them money, security features, and control. We migrate practices off these bundles regularly; here's what we find every time.

What the reseller bundle actually is

When you buy M365 through a hosting company, you don't get a normal Microsoft tenant relationship. You get their repackaged version: their admin portal sitting in front of Microsoft's, their support queue, their license catalog, their markup. The email works — but you're renting through a middleman built for volume, not for healthcare.

What you give up

  • License choices. Reseller catalogs are thin. The security-heavy license a clinic actually needs (Business Premium, with Intune and Defender) is often unavailable or buried — so practices sit on licenses that can't enforce device encryption or conditional access at all.
  • Admin control. Many bundles block or proxy the real Microsoft admin center. Need to enable unified audit logging, tune DLP, or connect a compliance tool? You may literally not have the buttons.
  • The BAA question. Microsoft's BAA covers proper commercial tenants. Under a reseller's consumer-style wrapper, verify it — we've seen practices that couldn't produce evidence the agreement attached to their tenant.
  • Add-on lock-in. Email security and backup add-ons in these bundles (often rebranded Proofpoint or similar) bill at retail with no alternatives. On the open market the same protection costs less — or comes free inside licenses you should own anyway.
  • Speed. Every support issue routes through the reseller's first-line queue before anyone who can touch the real problem sees it.

What migration actually involves (less than you fear)

Here's the part nobody tells you: your mailboxes don't move. They already live in Microsoft's cloud. Leaving GoDaddy is a billing and control transfer, not a data migration — done right, nobody's email blinks:

  1. A partner (like us) requests a reseller relationship on your tenant.
  2. Licenses are re-sourced — same products, usually better ones, often cheaper.
  3. The old bundle is cancelled once the new licenses attach.
  4. DNS and domain stay wherever you want them.

Downtime when sequenced correctly: none. Staff impact: none. They log in Monday like always.

What changes afterward

Full admin center access. The real license catalog, including the HIPAA-enabling tiers. A direct line to people who manage healthcare tenants daily. And typically a lower or equal monthly bill — the middleman margin comes out, the right security goes in.

If your M365 invoice says GoDaddy on it, we'll review your tenant and tell you exactly what you're missing — no obligation, takes us about a day. Start here.
